Frequently asked questions

How many holidays do central government employees get in 2027?

17 gazetted holidays, plus any two of the 32 restricted holidays. In Delhi and New Delhi the 17 are the 14 compulsory holidays plus Holi, Ram Navami and Janmashtami (Vaishnav). Elsewhere, the coordination committee in each state capital picks the three extra holidays from a list of 12. In 2027, 6 of the 17 fall on a Saturday or Sunday.

What is the difference between a gazetted and a restricted holiday?

On a gazetted holiday the office is closed for everyone. On a restricted holiday the office is open, but each employee may take the day off. You can take any two restricted holidays in a year.

When is the Diwali holiday in 2027?

Friday, 29 October 2027. Naraka Chaturdasi (Thursday 28 October), Govardhan Puja (Saturday 30 October) and Bhai Duj (Sunday 31 October) are restricted holidays.

How many working days are there in 2027?

250 for an office in Delhi on a five-day week: 365 days, minus 104 Saturdays and Sundays, minus the 11 holidays that fall on weekdays. On a six-day week it is 299.

Is this the bank holiday list for 2027?

No. Banks follow the Reserve Bank of India's holiday list, which differs from state to state.

Do state government employees get these holidays?

Not necessarily. State government offices, schools and courts follow the holiday list issued by their own state government.
