How 7th CPC salary is worked out

Your salary starts with basic pay, which is one cell of the 7th CPC pay matrix. Each pay level is a column and each cell going down is one annual increment of 3%, rounded to the nearest ₹100. Everything else is calculated from basic pay:

From the gross, the pay bill deducts your pension contribution (10% of basic + DA for NPS and UPS, or your chosen GPF rate for the old pension), CGEGIS (₹120, ₹60 or ₹30 by group), CGHS if you hold a card, professional tax in some states, and monthly income tax (TDS).

Worked example. Level 10, first cell, basic ₹56,100 in an X city: DA ₹33,660, HRA ₹16,830, TA ₹7,200 + DA on TA ₹4,320, so gross is ₹1,18,110. NPS takes ₹8,976 and CGEGIS ₹120.

What this calculator does not include

Special allowances that depend on the post (Children Education Allowance, risk and hardship allowance, Dress Allowance, Non-Practising Allowance for doctors, Military Service Pay) are not added. Add them yourself if they apply. Income tax is estimated under the new regime with the standard deduction and the employer NPS deduction; use the income tax calculator for an exact comparison with the old regime.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current DA rate for central government employees?

DA is 60% of basic pay from January 2026. Pensioners get Dearness Relief at the same rate. The next instalment from July 2026 is expected but not yet approved.

How is in-hand salary different from gross salary?

Gross salary is everything you earn in a month (basic, DA, HRA, TA). In-hand salary is what reaches your bank after NPS or GPF, CGEGIS, CGHS, professional tax and income tax are deducted.

Does DA count for HRA?

No. HRA is a percentage of basic pay only. DA is paid on basic pay and on transport allowance.

When does the annual increment happen?

On 1 January or 1 July each year, depending on your date of joining or last promotion. It moves you one cell down in the same level, which is about 3% more basic pay.
