Why in-hand salary is less than CTC ÷ 12
Cost to Company includes money your employer spends on you that never reaches your bank account every month: the employer's PF contribution (12% of basic, often capped at 12% of the wage ceiling: ₹3,000 a month since the ceiling rose to ₹25,000 on 17 September 2026), gratuity (about 4.81% of basic, paid only after 5 years), insurance premiums and variable pay paid once a year. From your gross salary, your own PF (12% of basic), professional tax (up to ₹2,500 a year in states that levy it) and income tax are deducted.
For a ₹12 lakh CTC with 40% basic, gross salary is a little over ₹96,000 a month and, under the new regime, no income tax is due, so in-hand pay is gross minus PF and professional tax. Read CTC vs in-hand salary and salary slip components explained.
