Frequently asked questions

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free?

Under the new regime, yes: taxable income up to ₹12,00,000 pays no tax because of the rebate. For salaried people the standard deduction of ₹75,000 means a salary up to ₹12,75,000 is tax-free. The rebate does not apply to special-rate income such as capital gains.

Which regime is better for me?

The old regime is better only if your deductions and exemptions are large. The calculator shows the break-even amount for your salary. For most people earning under ₹12.75 lakh, the new regime is better.

Can I switch between regimes every year?

Salaried people and pensioners without business income can choose each year when filing the return. Tell your employer your choice at the start of the year so TDS is deducted correctly.

Did the Income-tax Act 2025 change the tax rates?

No. The new Act, in force from 1 April 2026, rewrote and simplified the law and replaced "assessment year" with "tax year", but kept the rates and slabs.
